One of the BEST adventure serials of all time, with a
great cast, inventive & original stunts, and a
well-crafted script, DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE tells
the tale of diabolical mastermind Harry Crowel, a.k.a.
Prisoner 39013. Crowel escapes from prison, and aided by a
seemingly endless supply of henchmen, sets out to destroy
all holdings of industrialist Horace Granville, the man
who put him in prison. One target is an amusement park,
home of the three Daredevils of the Red Circle, who
perform death-defying stunts. Aghast at innocent lives
lost, our three heroes swear to capture No. 39013. It'll
be harder than they suspect, as the villain is holding the
REAL Granville captive, and with a near-perfect disguise,
has taken his place!! A mysterious cloaked benefactor
known as The Red Circle aides the daredevils in their
crusade. CHARLES QUIGLEY, HERMAN (Bruce Bennett ) BRIX and
DAVID SHARPE (normally the leading stuntman in all the
Republic serials, here he renders a creditable onscreen
performance as on of the three male leads) make a superb
trio of action heroes in what is arguably among the top
three or four action serials ever produced. Pretty CAROLE
LANDIS (playing Granville's granddaughter here ) went on
to become a major star in "A" pictures before her untimely
death, MILES MANDER (as Granville AND Crowel in disguise )
and the great screen villain CHARLES MIDDLETON (Flash
Gordon's Ming The Merciless ) give great support. This
12-chapter 1939 Republic release was directed by action
film ace WILLIAM WITNEY with JOHN ENGLISH, and is highly
recommended. This digitally-remastered version on DVD is
region-free and recorded in NTSC
format and presented on two discs, and should run on any
standard DVD player. The feature runs 211 minutes, with an
interactive menu and chapter selections. |
