Gina Carano in the “Female Expendables” Movie

in Angels of Action!

Some action heroes ACT like badasses, but there are a few action heroes that actually ARE badasses; Gina Carano is definitely the later.

She’s was at one time ranked as the third-best female fighter in the world. I don’t know who the other two women are, but they must be damn scary. Gina Carano is gorgeous and she could beat the living crap out of you. I don’t usually have much interest in muscular women, but Gina’s physique hits a great balance. She still looks feminine, but she also looks seriously powerful.

Some guys will tell you that she comes off as being too masculine, to which I reply…

...whatever.

…whatever.

You can watch her kicking ass right now on Netflix Instant on Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, which was basically a film designed to showcase Gina’s unique abilities. There are three major fight scenes in the film and all of them are excellent. There’s no pulse-pounding music or slow motion silliness during the fights. Soderburgh basically just points the camera at a world class fighter and lets us watch her do her thing. I love that she kicks the snot out of Michael Fassbender while she’s wearing a cocktail dress.

You’ve got to give Fassbender props for keeping up with her, since he is obviously not an actual MMA fighter. Gina also fights with Channing Tatum and another big-name star (who I can’t identify without spoiling the end). There are actually quite a few big-name stars in it. It’s a cool movie, check it out. Here are some more Gina photos.

Stunning.

Gina Carano is a superheroine. No special FX required.

Not the face! NOT THE FACE!

So this “Female Expendables” thing that Adi Shankar is putting together… I don’t know… I realize that they haven’t shot anything, they don’t have a name for it (FemForce is taken :) ), and they don’t even have a full cast yet, but it’s rarely a good sign when Hollywood tries to get me excited about one movie by referencing another movie (and it’s not like The Expendables is terribly worthy of immitation).

For now I suppose it’s fun to imagine what the cast of an all-female team of superstar action heroines might look like. Today they announced that Gina Carano was the first to be cast in the film. There were 9 headliners in the first Expendables movie so that leaves 8 others. Here are a few picks off the top of my head.

  1. Pam Grier
  2. Sigourney Weaver
  3. Linda Hamilton
  4. Milla Jovovich
  5. Kate Beckinsale
  6. Jennifer Garner
  7. Maggie Q
  8. Emma Watson

Yup. I’d watch that movie. I didn’t mention Angelina Jolie as part of the team because she’s gotta be the bad guy. :)

With the exception of Emma Watson, this list skews to a slightly older demographic (as does The Expendables). I wonder if Hollywood has the guts for that, or if they’re going to “flesh out” the cast with a bunch of sexy, young 20-somethings. I wouldn’t be surprised.

The only Maggie Q movie I ever saw was Balls of Fury. :-) Pam Grier deserves to be at the top of the list. How about Michelle Yeoh and Lucy Lawless. Eve Torres from the WWE won Stars Earn Stripes using real guns and she looked fantastic doing it.

Really pleased that you put Pam Grier at the top of the list.

I don’t think those first four are optional. The other slots are debatable, but if you don’t have those four then you don’t have the best of the best.

I like Michelle Yeoh, but you need a couple of young guns in there also, so I gave Michelle’s slot to Maggie Q.

Lucy Lawless is an excellent actress, I would like to BE Sam Raimi when I grow up, and I’ll watch anything with Bruce Campbell, but in all honesty Xena doesn’t do anything for me. I have tried to watch it several times because I feel like I “should” like it… but I just can’t get into it.

Room for everyone now.

Expendabelles.

So rather than having one solid cast, we’ll get two mediocre ones? These could easily turn into unintentional parodies if they aren’t careful.
