Indie filmmaker Tom Madigan contacted us last year about doing some special effects work for him in order to complete his Super Girl fan film (starring Tiffany Giardina as Supergirl and Kaight Zoia as Batgirl). Tom operates on a microbudget like us so he couldn’t really “hire” us to do it, but he IS out in California. Hmmmm… Maria Paris is ALSO in California… do you see where this is going?
We had just released the first installment of The Ghost of Garganta which features a pretty great confrontation between Maria’s character Yvette and Garganta (Brenna Barry). Right before Maria left for the West Coast we squeezed in a quick follow up confrontation that will occur later in the series, but we didn’t have the time to do it justice at the time and it was high on our list of things that we wished we could reshoot. As it turns out Maria and Tom are not too far from each other, so we worked out a great deal. We would do the effects work for Tom and he would hang out with Maria Paris for a couple of hours and film some pickups for GOG. We sent Tom and Maria some storyboards and the script and a pre-viz video for them to immitate and they did a GREAT JOB! Tom is a talented filmmaker and Maria still rocks. Their efforts are going to add a lot of “impact” when Yvette and Garganta run into each other next.
In exchange JohnJG did the superbreath, the glowing eyes, the kryptonite glow and the batarang throw seen in the video below. This turned out to be good practice since months later we would begin post-production on Stormy Tempest: Women of Tomorrow which features an incredible amount of our own Supergirl-esque effects.
We’ve occassionally considered the idea of a Bill Black produced, Tom Madigan directed Blue Bulleteer clip starring Maria Paris and filmed in California. Check out Tom’s work in the film below and let us know if this is something you guys would like to see.
